UKRAINIAN PHOENIX

About

From June 30, 2022, the National Museum of Ukrainian Folk Decorative Art has been hosting the exhibition "Ukrainian Phoenix. Vasilkov Majolica," in partnership with the National Museum of the Revolution of Dignity. For the first time, the exhibition features the legendary ceramic rooster from Borodyanka that survived the bombing of residential buildings by Russian forces in March 2022. The catalyst for creating this joint project was a photo of a kitchen cabinet with a decorative pitcher-rooster, which became a symbol of Ukrainians' unbroken spirit. This photo circulated worldwide, and the cabinet and rooster were transferred to the collections of the National Museum of the Revolution of Dignity. The ceramic figurine from the Vasilkov Majolica Factory intrigued many not only because of its recent history but also due to its origin. Visitors to the museum will learn about the symbol of Ukrainian resilience, the uniqueness of Vasilkov ceramics, and the artists who created its distinctive character by exploring the exhibition. The exhibition narrates the history of the Vasilkov Majolica Factory (VMF) - a successful artistic enterprise of the 20th century - and showcases works by leading artists who continuously experimented to enhance the techniques and production technology, thus developing the expressiveness and attractiveness of the product range. The primary focuses of the exhibition are on the imagery of the rooster in the history of ceramic folk art, the authorship of the main protagonist of the exhibition - the "Borodyanka rooster," bird and flower images, "friendly animals" created by leading VMF artists Nadia and Valeriy Protorievs. Additionally, the exhibition features works by prominent artists and masters of Ukrainian pottery, such as Mykhailo Denysenko, Prokop Bidasyuk, and Omelyan Zheliezniak.
