This publication includes more than 100 original works by Maria Prymachenko from the collection of the National Museum of Ukrainian Folk Decorative Art (Kyiv) and the Ponomarchuk family collection (Kyiv). The exhibition also includes the artist’s personal belongings: an apron, a woman’s shirt, panels embroidered by the artist, and scissors she used to work with, provided by the Prymachenko Family Foundation. The texts were created by Peter Doroshenko (foreword), with an introductory article by Oksana Semenik, in which the researcher examines the multifaceted work of Maria Prymachenko, from mythology and folklore to her universe, from irony over the Soviet system to the Chernobyl disaster, from ceramics to embroidered paintings (which are little known even in Ukraine). About the unique world of Mariia, as well as her influence on her family and, more broadly, the artistic context in Ukraine, the current world (exhibitions in Luxembourg, Dresden, paintings at the Venice Biennale in 2022, in the London Saatchi Gallery, the Swiss Open Art Museum, etc. ) The great-granddaughter Anastasia Prymachenko talks about the habits and everyday life of her great-grandmother in a conversation with Peter Doroshenko, director of the Ukrainian Museum in New York and curator of the exhibition of the same name, which will run in New York from October 7, 2023 to April 7, 2024.

This is Maria Prymachenko’s first exhibition in North America and the first full bilingual exhibition catalog, which aims to showcase the distinctive work of one of Ukraine’s most prominent artists to an international audience.

Maria Prymachenko has always been our strength and our glory in Ukraine. And since the beginning of the Great War, her name and work have gained worldwide recognition. Exhibitions of her works sound like an important symbol, like a greeting from many hearts: Glory to Ukraine!
